Shopify vs WooCommerce: which is right for your business?
This is the question we're asked most, and the answer that earns trust is: it depends on facts about your business, not on the platform wars. We build on both. Here's the actual decision framework.
The one-sentence versions
Shopify is a rented store in a managed mall: you pay monthly, and in exchange security, hosting, speed and updates are someone else's problem.
WooCommerce is a store you own outright on land you control: no rent, no rules, but the maintenance is yours (or your developer's).
Cost over three years
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | $29–79/mo = $1,044–2,844 | $0 |
| Hosting | Included | $10–25/mo = $360–900 |
| Apps / plugins | Often $50–200/mo | Mostly one-time or free |
| Transaction fees | 0–2% extra unless Shopify Payments | Processor rates only |
| Build cost | $700–2,000 | $700–2,000 |
Over three years, an app-heavy Shopify store commonly costs $4,000–8,000 more than the equivalent WooCommerce build. That's not a verdict — it's the price of never thinking about updates, and for many owners it's worth every cent.
Choose Shopify if…
- You want to never think about technical maintenance. This is the big one.
- You're dropshipping or using print-on-demand (the app ecosystem is unmatched).
- You plan to sell on Instagram, TikTok and marketplaces — Shopify's integrations are the smoothest.
- Fast, reliable checkout out of the box matters more to you than customizing it.
Choose WooCommerce if…
- Monthly fees genuinely bother you and you're playing a long game on margins.
- You need custom logic: wholesale pricing tiers, B2B portals, bookings mixed with products, regional tax quirks, unusual shipping rules.
- Content and SEO are core to your growth — WordPress's blogging and SEO tooling is still the strongest there is.
- You already run a WordPress site and want one system, not two.
The myths, quickly
"WooCommerce is insecure." Unmaintained WooCommerce is insecure. Properly hosted, updated and hardened, it processes payments through the same bank-grade processors (Stripe, PayPal) as everyone else.
"Shopify is only for small stores." Gymshark ran on Shopify. It scales.
"You can migrate later, so it doesn't matter." You can — we do migrations regularly — but URLs, SEO and integrations make it surgery. Choosing right the first time is cheaper.
