How much does a Shopify store really cost in 2026?
Ask five agencies what a Shopify store costs and you'll get five answers between $500 and $50,000. All of them are technically telling the truth — which is exactly why this question deserves a straight, itemized answer.
The costs nobody can avoid
Whatever anyone tells you, every Shopify store carries these:
| Item | Cost | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic plan | from $29/month | Shopify |
| Domain name | $10–20/year | Registrar |
| Transaction fees | ~2–3% per sale | Payment processor |
That's the floor: roughly $400 a year before you sell anything. Everything else is a choice.
The build: $0 to $50,000 — here's what moves the number
DIY ($0 + your evenings)
Shopify's templates are genuinely decent. If you have design instincts, patience, and a simple catalogue, you can launch alone. The hidden cost is time — most owners tell us it took 60–100 hours — and conversion: a first-time DIY store typically converts around 0.5–1%, versus 2–3% for a professionally engineered one. On $5,000 of monthly traffic value, that gap is real money.
Freelancer ($150–800)
You'll get a customized template. The variance is enormous: some freelancers are excellent, and some will leave you with slow apps, broken tracking and an unanswered final message. Ask to see three live stores they built, and check the mobile checkout on each.
Specialist studio ($700–2,500)
This is the range where stores get engineered rather than assembled: conversion-focused product pages, payments and shipping configured for every country you sell to, email flows, and — critically — tracking that actually works when you start running ads. (For transparency: this is the bracket we work in, from $699.)
Big agency ($5,000–50,000+)
Custom theme development from scratch, brand strategy workshops, dedicated project managers. Worth it above roughly $1M in annual revenue; overkill below it.
Where store owners overspend
- Apps. The average store accumulates $100–300/month of app subscriptions, many replicating features Shopify now includes free. Audit quarterly.
- "Premium" themes bought twice. A $350 theme customized badly still looks like a $0 theme. Design skill matters more than the theme's price tag.
- Rebuilds caused by cheap first builds. The most expensive store is the one you pay for twice. If your budget is genuinely tiny, DIY honestly beats a $150 rush job.
Questions to ask anyone quoting you
- Is conversion tracking (Pixel, GA4) included, and will you prove it fires?
- How many products are included, and what does one more cost?
- Who configures shipping zones and taxes for my countries?
- What exactly happens after launch if something breaks?
- Is the price fixed in writing?
Anyone who answers those five clearly is worth talking to — whatever their price.
